Caribbean Airlines employees team up to clean up Manzanilla Beach
Beaches can play a role in mitigating the effects of climate change. By acting as a buffer, it can protect the coastline from the damaging effects of high winds and waves of powerful storms.
Beach clean-ups are also a learning opportunity for citizens. There’s a major difference between seeing photos of plastic pollution online and witnessing it on an actual beach. It makes one think about the impact of the non-biodegradable stuff that we are using and how it’s affecting the environment.
On November 16 2019, Caribbean Airlines became the first airline within the Caribbean Region to collaborate with the Caribbean Network for Integrated Rural Development (CNIRD) for a coastal clean-up.
Over 100 Caribbean Airlines employees and their families volunteered to remove marine debris from the Manzanilla Beach, on Trinidad’s East Coast and to create greater awareness of the need to protect and preserve coastal areas.
A total of 1108 pounds of rubbish was collected and cleared from the Manzanilla beachfront. The data was recorded by CNIRD and added to Trinidad & Tobago’s official statistics. The statistics are placed in an international database which is used to improve ways to fight pollution.
